National Survey on Household Incomes and Expenses (ENIGH)

The ENIGH is a survey constantly conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática - INEGI) since 1984. Its main objective is to provide information about the distribution, amount and structure of income and household expenses. The survey can generate information about the current households income according to the source from which it originated; about the current expenses by purpose and structure of expenditures of financial and capital perceptions. It also generates information about sociodemographic characteristics, work status and occupational characteristics of household members from 12 years and older, as well as studies about the characteristics of housing infrastructure and household equipment.

Based on the extension of the sample in some states, it is possible to generate information from each state in the following cases: Veracruz in 2000; Mexico City and Nuevo Leon in 2004; Puebla, Sonora, Tabasco and Veracruz in 2005; Guanajuato and Veracruz in 2006. In 2007, a survey was only conducted in Estado de Mexico. With the exception of the survey conducted in Estado de Mexico, the representative data of each state is integrated into the national datasets.

The datasets from each survey carried out from 2000 to 2006 are free and available at the INEGI website, previous registration is required. For the institutions responsible of this survey is very useful to keep a list of all data users. Syntax documents provided in this section can be used to tag variables and their correspondent values.
