National Survey of Occupation and Employment - Child Labor Module (MTI) 2007

The Child Labor Module (MTI) was conducted along with National Survey on Occupation and Employment (ENOE) in the fourth quarter of 2007. The MTI module is a joint effort of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (Secretaría del Trabajo y Previsión Social - STPS) and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía - INEGI) to generate information about economic and noneconomic activities of children, enabling the design and monitoring of public policies oriented to the attention of Mexican children.

The MTI's main objective is to have an updated database about the demographic and occupational characteristics of the population from 5 to 17 years old with an economic activity in the country (see technical sheet).

About Us

In its initial stage the BD/Social MX site collaborates with three institutions engaged in making the information available to researchers, academics, decision and public policy makers so that can easily analyze the data contained in the surveys conducted in the past by various institutions.

These three institutions are:

INMUJERES is the institution of the Federal Government responsible for directing the national policy in order to achieve equal opportunities between women and men, through institutionalization and gender mainstreaming in projects by the Mexican state.

FLACSO-Mexico is an international autonomous academic organization created with the purpose of enhancing the social and political analysis in Latin America through graduate programs and academic research. FLACSO Mexico addresses, within a framework of theoretical and methodological pluralism, problems of contemporary societies from the Latin American reality, and links research to teaching in order to generate knowledge and contribute to solving public issues of national and regional scope.

Alianza Cívica, AC is an organization dedicated to building democracy and citizenship through citizen monitoring and promotion campaigns for electoral reform. Its scope includes the promotion of citizen participation in public affairs and in observing the government´s performance.
This digital collection integrates Information and Datasets about Mexico. The objective is to provide an useful tool for analysis and dissemination of socio-economic information. BDSocial is a public access site.

Introduction

BDSocial integrates in its collection datasets and technical documents of surveys generated in the country, partly or totally financed by public funds, over the past years. Additionally, there are survey projects created from academic institutions and civil society organizations in order to promote their dissemination. Each different dataset survey is presented through a simple and homogeneous structure as well as questionnaires, technical sheets and the syntax for using the data.

This site not only recollects information scattered in different sites, but also, for the first time, allows access to a collection of dataset surveys that were not publicly available. Using both the collaboration of survey institutions and the tools provided by the law of access and transparency to public government information (Ley de Transparencia y Acceso a la Información Pública Gubernamental), datasets have been placed in the BDSocial site for its unrestricted access.

This web site is a joint project initiated by the National Women's Institute (Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres - INMUJERES), the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences agency in Mexico (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales - FLACSO) and Alianza Cívica, A. C.
The aim of BDSocial is to facilitate and promote the use of information for a better and more accurate understanding of social reality that provides help as strong evidence for the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and social programs. In particular, it seeks to promote the gender approach in the analysis of social information.
The infos and infoPeG sections, currently in its initial stage of construction, are efforts to disseminate relevant research and analysis studies in social issues in general and social analysis with a gender perspective, respectively. The infoE section will offer technical and methodological notes for working and processing the datasets.

We are looking forward to receive feedback from all users through our contact information, especially from the community concerned and committed to social analysis, from academic institutions and civic and social organizations to international organizations and government.

All the datasets and the technical information included herein are responsibility of the entities and agencies responsible for the design and implementation of each survey, as mentioned in the technical sheets.

We hope that the social analysis and the exchange of evidence-based knowledge will help to strengthen effective social policies and will incorporate gender perspective in policies and social programs.

The datasets included in BDSocial are public and contain useful information that helps to support the socioeconomic and demographic analysis of the Mexican population, as well as to identify features that characterize men and women.

The surveys included in this collection have been developed by various academic institutions, both domestic and international, and by public institutions and agencies. For some of the institutions responsible of each survey is very useful to keep a list of all data users. Therefore, we have included in this site the user registration access for each survey.

The use of the datasets, the information generated and the conclusions drawn from them are the sole responsibility of the users.

On this web site you will find the files of each survey (and/or links to the original web sites) with the following description:

Datasets. This section contains the datasets files. To access them you need to save the file on the hard drive of your computer and then open the files using SPSS or a data conversion program.

Questionnaires. This section contains the questionnaires that were conducted to gather information on each survey.

Technical Sheet. This section contains a summary of the general characteristics of the survey (objectives, periodicity, design, coverage, etc.), and a description of the files in the datasets.
Syntax. This section provides the SPSS syntax commands that facilitate the processing of the information contained in the datasets: defining variables and/or categorical data values, as well as instructions for linking different datasets from one survey.

Additional documents. This section contains documents issued by each institution responsible for conducting the surveys such as result reports, field reports (general features conducting the survey), and methodological notes (sample design, size and sample accuracy, weights calculation, etc.)

The following surveys integrate the collection of the BDSocial datasets. Projects added with special modules in their datasets or year-based surveys that are only available in the BDSocial datasets are highlighted in orange.
