The sample of the XII General Census of Population and Housing 2000 was conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía - INEGI), and is a part of the censuses that have been conducted in the country since 1895 with a 10 year periodicity. Its objective is to generate demographic, socioeconomic and mapping information necessary for the country, with the maximal geographical disaggregation possible, as well as to enrich the historical statistic data series, maintaining national and international comparability where possible, and allow the construction of sampling frames to conduct household surveys. This survey also provides indicators on housing, households, persons residing in them, internal and international migration, among others (see technical sheet).

The datasets are free and available at the INEGI website, previous registration is required. For the institutions responsible of this survey is very useful to keep a list of all data users. Syntax documents provided in this section can be used to tag variables and their correspondent values.
